Christian Wallumrod Ensemble
JAZZ PICK OF THE WEEK (The Guardian) RECOMMENDED SHOW (Venue Magazine) 'DON'T MISS … Classy, classic Scandinavian jazz at its ECM-approved best. Have your ears been good lately? Do they deserve a feast? This highlight of St George's International Jazz Season reunites the Norwegian quartet that recorded Wallumrod's 'A Year From Easter' ECM album in 2005. And what a band it is – Nils Okland's moody folk-informed Hardanger fiddle, Arve Henriksen's perfectly modulated and inspirational trumpet and the spare precision of Per Odvar Johansen's drumming are perfect collaborators for Wallumrod's piano and his compositions. The disciplined, reflective tone of the ensemble, even when playing freely, inevitably evokes the label 'Nordic' but there's as much New York minimalism and even old-fashioned swing to it. The special joy of this evening's performance is that it will be completely acoustic, so – he that hath ears to hear …'Minimalist free-jazz of quiet beauty. As close to perfection as you're likely to hear, this powerfully atmospheric ambient ECM ensemble offers classical overtones, a healthy dose of Nordic folk and more swing and edge than might be expected. Exquisitely performed, the blend of Arve Henriksen's trumpet with Nils Okland's fiddle, plus percussion and piano, is uniquely beautiful. Restlessly active chamber jazz. The concert will be heard acoustically, without amplification, by candlelight. 'The writing is dense, dark and seems to hover in the air, like a mist moving in across a Norwegian fjord.'
