St George's presents
Orchestra of the
Age of Enlightenment with Robin Ticciati RECOMMENDED SHOW (Venue Magazine) 'An invigorating, take-no-hostages celebration of Mendelssohn's musical romanticism, with all eyes on the conductor Robin Ticciati, whose rise and rise has been something to behold. Having cut his directorial teeth in Sweden, he was talent-spotted by Sir Colin Davis, mentored by Simon Rattle and snapped up as music director of Glyndebourne on Tour and most recently as director of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra ... and he's still only in his mid-20s. Perhaps with the Scottish appointment in mind, he rounds off a decidedly romantic programme from the OAE with Mendelssohn's affectionate Scottish Symphony. Decidedly recommended.'Robin Ticciati conductor Horn soloists of the OAE W S Bennett The Naiades Overture Schumann Concerto for 4 horns and orchestra Mendelssohn Symphony No 3 in A minor ‘Scottish’ The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment is one of the finest period-instrument groups in the world, and its sound is arguably at its optimum in the context of the St George’s acoustic: glorious, superbly refined and exuberant. Under the controlled assurance of the astonishing young conductor Robin Ticciati, making his St George’s debut, the phenomenal musicianship of the OAE is brought to bear on a captivating programme of extraordinary Romantic works, including Schumann's inventive Concerto for 4 Horns, and Mendelssohn's exhilarating Scottish Symphony. A prodigy of British conducting, Ticciati, (the youngest conductor to appear at La Scala, Milan, and now music director of Glyndebourne on Tour) fuses precision and dramatic urgency to make the music bristle. A ravishingly beautiful concert, thrilling in every bar, this is unquestionably a performance not to miss. Pre-concert Talk 6.15-6.45pm A discussion with the leading players of the OAE's horn section, chaired by Jasper Rees, journalist, horn enthusiast and author of the quirky, evocative memoir ‘I Found My Horn’, in which Rees decided after 22 years to take up the French horn again. Free for ticket holders.
