Chris Wood's Handmade Life

RECOMMENDED SHOW (Venue Magazine)
'First he was with the Oyster Band, then there came the legendary instrumental duo with Andy Cutting, then he formed the English Acoustic Collective, and these days he is garnering praise working alongside Martin and Eliza Carthy in The Imagined Village: this is a potted (and incomplete) background to Chris Wood, self-taught guitarist, violinist, singer and composer, one of the finest musicians the modern English folk world has produced. His debut solo album 'Lark Descending' took music critics by storm whilst his second, 'Trespasser', won the BBC Folk Award for Album of the Year. His latest project teams him up with drummer Andy Gangadeen (The Bays), cellist Barney Morse Brown (Eliza Carthy Band) and trombonist Robert Jarvis (London Improviser’s Orchestra) – all from The Imagined Village. The music they make blends ancient and modern, traditional and contemporary to produce something unique.'
It's old, it's new, it's new folk.

'In a warm, dark brown voice with sparse, minimalist accompaniment, Wood is an intimate storyteller, applying such nuance and gravitas to every phrase you are imperceptibly lured into his world. Magnificent.' MOJO

Multi-award winning Chris Wood has earned a reputation as the English folk scene's resident sage, with a thrilling, genre-busting spirit of enquiry that leads him to ceaselessly reinvent traditional music into surprising new forms without compromising its acoustic integrity. This latest project teams him up with drummer Andy Gangadeen (The Bays), cellist Barney Morse Brown (Eliza Carthy Band) and trombonist Robert Jarvis (London Improviser's Orchestra) (all from The Imagined Village). The music - with Wood on stringed-things and vocals - is strange and beautiful, ancient and contemporary. Wood says: "The simple lesson we have learnt from our ancestors is to tell nothing more or less than our own story and that the gold we are all searching for is in our own backyard."

"I think Chris Wood is an incredible artist.... he combines stories and music in such an original and completely melodic way." LAURIE ANDERSON

'Claims that he is the greatest living English songwriter are not that far fetched. Chris Wood is one of our true living geniuses.' MUSIC OHM
