Migrations: Great Journeys in World Music
Soul Noel:
The Migrations Christmas Party Pete Josef Trio and DJ Queen Bee Late Music Session A Migrations 09 Event. Visit migrationsmusic.com for further information. RECOMMENDED SHOW (Venue Magazine) 'Soul ... and reggae, ska, funk and soca, too ... this top-quality seasonal showcase features a star-studded soul showband and two rather exceptional vocalists. One name from the band really stands out – the extremely cool soul-jazz pianist Robert Mitchell – and, with the leading voices of South Africa jazz diva Sibongile Khumalo and UK's Ola Onabule, those three names alone would merit attention. As you might guess the repertoire will include traditional and modern festive faves but all extensively arranged to make the most of the highly talented (and soulful) ensemble.'With a shot of Africa and a twist of the Caribbean, Soul Noël brings you the best Christmas party in town. 'Hailed as Britain's finest soul singer - someone who not only connects with his audience but gets them up and dancing – Ola Onabule's four-octave vocal range drips with emotion.' PASSION MAGAZINE 'A musical adventuress and mezzo soprano with an outstanding vocal range, Sibongile Khumalo has been hailed the queen of South African jazz, the Empress of Soul, a diva for the 21st century. If it's star quality you're after, then look no further.' CHICAGO SUN TIMES The party starts here, with an incredible African and Caribbean-themed Christmas show – all your favourite classic carols, from We Wish You a Merry Christmas and Hark the Herald Angels Sing to Jingle Bells and Ding Dong Merrily on High, with a reggae, ska and soca twist. Starring South Africa's great soul diva Sibongile Khumalo and the Anglo-Nigerian soul star Ola Onabule, backed by a sizzling Stax Soul Revue showband directed by trumpeter Kevin Robinson (Jazz Jamaica All Stars, Simply Red, Incognito) and a stellar choir featuring top vocalists who have sung with the world's biggest stars (including Lionel Richie, Grace Jones, Stevie Wonder, Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams), expect seriously soulful entertainment with a seasonal vibe stretching from sanctified carols and spirituals to get-on-down funk. And following the show, warm yourself on a winter's night with the Migrations Christmas Party, a free after-show featuring the Pete Josef Trio. 'Blessed with a big, big voice, singer Ola Onabule comes across like a male version of Anita Baker. One for R&B lovers everywhere.' JAZZWISE Sibongile Khumalo: 'Her artistry is such a massive, glorious, multi-faceted thing that one battles to find words to express it’s full range. See her on stage, and you don't want the experience to end.' SUNDAY TIMES To view the Soul Noel singers and showband perform God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen (5:53) click here. Late Music Session in the Festival Bar: Pete Josef Trio and DJ Queen Bee Bask in the glorious, sweet-voiced soul of Pete Josef. Singing directly to the heart, Pete Josef (who lends his talents as a guitarist to the music of Roni Size Reprazent) commands attention: effortlessly transfixing the room with his refined, pure tone voice. Weaving reflective, downbeat neo-soul with uplifting, heartfelt soul songs flavoured with exotic world-jazz, Pete Josef's original songs stamp his own modern twist on the classic soul sound. Bristol's Dancehall Queen DJ Queen Bee (Massive Attack tour DJ, Glastonbury Festival Jazz World Stage resident and international WOMAD festival DJ) is a firm favourite on the Bristol club circuit with a reputation for her classy mix of dance floor jazz, hard funk, roots reggae and deep Latin beats. Following Pete Josef's live set, Queen Bee's party style jazz-world, cheerful funk and offbeat reggae rocks the dance floor. Wonderful stuff. And to help the pound in your pocket go a little further, the tempting drinks deals in the Festival Bar include bottles of Budvar, Peroni and Sol for £2, and Averys French Country Red or White wine for £10 a bottle.
