Portico Quartet
JAZZ PICK OF THE WEEK (The Guardian)
'A unique and engaging ensemble tone [built] around minimalist Philip Glass / Steve Reich music, a little jazz phrasing and the sound of the melodiously tuned hang drum, balanced against a tough approach to improvisation and melody. Building and sustaining captivating, slow changing moods, Portico's confidence in its sound keeps on growing.'
Danceable next generation chamber jazz soundscapes with a lean world music twist.

'Massively assured ... a singular and talented outfit, pivoting on a beautifully lithe rhythm section and foregrounding [a] fluent saxophone to meditative and mesmerising effect.' TIME OUT

With their acclaimed second album, the fabulous 'Isla', Portico Quartet have defined the new possibilities of improvised experimental music for the next generation.

Produced by John Leckie (Radiohead etc), 'Isla' represents a new, more confident Portico, with an intensely textured and dynamic sound flowing between saxophone, double bass, drums and hang drum (looks like a wok, sounds like a steel pan). The extra- beefy bass sound and subtle electronic shadowing recall e.s.t., while lead saxophone lines suggest the joyful spontaneity of Balkan gypsy music.

Heard live, it's a very heady brew.

'Danceable chamber jazz soundscapes combine hectic soprano sax riffing over a dynamic rhythm section.'
