Mahler’s 5th symphony spans many human feelings: despair, grief, anger, anxiety, profound love (in the famous Adagietto) and finally explosive joy. Prepare to be swept away by this emotional juggernaut. Joseph Spooner returns to Bristol to delight us with the rarely performed original version of Tchaikovsky’s neo-classical Variations on a Rococo Theme, which provided the composer with a nostalgic trip to a bygone age, at a time when romantic music was the order of the day. For a seasonal flavour, the concert will open with Delius’ delightful Winter Night (Sleigh Ride).
