Paul Lewis (piano) Schubert Cycle VIII
Schubert
Sonata for Piano No 19 in C minor D958
Sonata for Piano No 20 in A D959
Sonata for Piano No 21 in B flat D960
It is some eighteen months since pianist Paul Lewis embarked on his journey through Franz Schubert’s piano music, and it has been an experience that has left audiences breathless and enraptured in equal measure. This eighth and last recital in the series uncovers the composer’s final three piano sonatas, which were composed just months before he died in 1828. Together they represent a haunting final word from the composer, not to mention a fitting end to this extraordinary series.
‘Like Brendel, Lewis has long been a powerful advocate for the pained sincerity of Schubert, capturing perfectly his music’s melancholy lyricism.’ The Guardian
