What is it about Debussy’s music that has inspired so many musicians to use it for their own creative response? And why are jazz musicians drawn in particular to his rebellious ideas? We’ll look at the radicalism of Debussy, his shocking chords and colours, and see why his music is so irresistible, with a brief reference to his influence on Messiaen for those going to the Nov 11 concert as well.

Jonathan James continues his popular explorations of works and their creators from this season in our ‘Beyond the Barline’ series of pre-concert talks, illustrated at the piano and with a fascinating array of audiovisual excerpts.

This talk precedes Eddie Parker’s Debussy Mirrored Ensemble, and is the fourth of this season’s ‘Beyond the Barline’ talks. 2018 marks the centenary of Debussy’s death.
