Conductor Andres Kaljuste
Grieg 2 Nordic Melodies Op 63
Britten Simple Symphony
Tõnu Kõrvits Laul (solo viola played by Andres)
Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings
Brandon Hill Chamber Orchestra and Andres Kaljuste are delighted to return to St George’s with this selection of music for strings.
Kaljuste himself will take the solo viola part in fellow-Estonian Tõnu Kõrvits’ Laul, a dreamy, song-like meditational miniature. Grieg’s Two Nordic Melodies, give a richly romantic setting to both yearning elegy and the bravado of helter-skelter rustic dance.
Whilst Britten’s Simple Symphony brings some playful, neo-classical lightness, its sophisticated and sometimes passionate discourse belies any notion of simplicity from its title.
Tchaikovsky’s magnificent Serenade for Strings is one of the crown jewels of the string repertoire. From its full-blooded and ardent opening chords, through elegant waltz and soul-searching elegy to jubilant affirmation in its conclusion, it is ever uplifting.
No interval, performance duration 1 hour.
