Exultate Singers, Bristol’s accomplished chamber choir, presents an enterprising programme showcasing the influence of Greek sacred and secular traditions and culture. Inspired by the spirituality of Greek Orthodox chant, John Tavener’s Song of Athene and Eonia are mesmerising and serene. Nick Bicât, a celebrated film and TV composer in the USA and UK, cleverly intersperses Greek epitaphs of ordinary people from across the centuries into the Latin Requiem text to create a work that is both exciting and poignant. Greece’s most famous composer Mikis Theodorakis is best known for his music to the film Zorba the Greek. In Kassiani’s Hymn he gives new life to the Orthodox tradition with powerful and expressive choral writing. English translations of Ancient Greek texts are set by the Irish composer Solfa Carlile in Between Sea and Sky, and the specially-commissioned Greek Love Songs by Toby Young’s contrast many choral styles and emotions with titles ranging from How much I love you to Aphrodisiac! Come and join us for an ecstatic evening of Greek musical wonders.
