Hezarfen Ensemble burst onto the Istanbul music scene in 2010, bringing contemporary music to Istanbul’s rich musical landscape. Tonight they perform no less than seven world premieres, all inspired by the melodic tradition of makam that can be heard widely across Turkish, Central Asian and North African regions. Seven very different Turkish composers interpret the makam soundworld through an ensemble including ney, kemençe, and kanun as well as western classical instruments, resulting in a truly authentic transcultural palette of sounds.
