To open our classical season, and while the memory of summer still lingers, we look to Roddy Williams to evoke some of the intense warmth and colour of Southern Italy in this beautiful collection of songs. These tiny jewel-like masterpieces paint a kaleidoscopic portrait of village life in all its human frailty and passion: men and women fall in and out of love, with squabbles and petty jealousies heard alongside exquisite serenades and love songs. It is a songbook filled with humour and charm, tenderness, despair and delight.

Like Mozart, Wolf creates characters that are astonishingly precise, vivid and detailed, but also somehow universal. Taking inspiration from the world of Cosi fan tutte, this vibrant village community is recreated by four singers – friends and rivals in love and life – presided over by someone who has ‘seen it all’ but maybe has still much to learn…

This is a new, critically acclaimed English translation of Italienisches Liederbuch.

Approximately 60 minute performance, no interval.
