Pianist James Lisney celebrates his sixtieth anniversary recital tour with a programme devoted to Frederyk Chopin that features two celebrated piano sonatas. For many years regarded as a miniaturist, Chopin’s radical solutions to large scale form have passed the test of time and now take their place in the centre ground of the piano repertoire.
“Hats off, gentlemen — a genius! If the mighty autocrat of the north knew what a dangerous enemy threatened him in Chopin’s works in the simple tunes of his mazurkas, he would forbid this music. Chopin’s works are canons buried in flowers.”. Thus wrote Robert Schumann about Chopin’s cultivation of the mazurka raised it to the highest level of art.
Chopin was a consummate improviser yet the Fantaisie and Impromptu are tightly constructed artworks that display another facet of his mastery. Innovative and unforgettable.
