Not All orchestras are the same…and not all orchestras can match the exuberant and electrifying performance style of the OAE . Their visits are always highlights of our season and tonight’s concert is really something special with every work a masterpiece in its own right. Music by Beethoven book ends the concert, with the heroic Coriolan Overture and the heart-warming and carefree symphony Beethoven called ‘My Little Symphony’. One of the OAE’s long-time collaborators, the great pianist Robert Levin, returns with his equally accomplished wife Ya-Fei Chuang for two duets: Mendelssohn’s sparkling Concerto for Two Pianos, full of youthful vivacity (written by Mendelssohn at just 14), and a piece from the final year of Schubert’s tragically short life, the magnificent Fantasy, which thrills audiences whenever it’s played.
