It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Carlos Cuco Rojas, harpist, musician and leader of Cimarron. Carlos and his partner Ana Veydó were the driving force behind Cimarron, who only this autumn were recognized with a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. Their joint wish was for the upcoming UK tour with Catrin Finch to continue as a mark of respect for Carlos’ musical legacy and we can now confirm that the concert will be taking place with harpist Duvan Rodolfo playing in place of Carlos.
Our thoughts and condolences are with Carlos’s family and friends at this time and we look forward to celebrating his life’s work in music with Cimarron and Catrin Finch at St George’s on Saturday 25 January.
Back in 2007, Welsh harpist Catrin Finch met with Colombian joropo band Cimarrón and embarked on an exhilarating tour of Wales. Twelve years later, Finch and Cimarrón meet again. The 6-piece Grammy-nominated Cimarrón perform joropo dance music from the cattle-rearing plains of the Orinoco, rooted in a deep tradition defined by the mestizo mixed heritage of African, Spanish and indigenous cultures, and led by harpist and composer Carlos Rojas. They make wild, untamed music that preserves the spirit of freedom found in one of the world’s most untouched regions. Alongside the remarkable and fearless artistry of Finch, one of the world’s leading harp players, this will be a rare chance to witness a thrilling collaboration marked by fierce instrumental virtuosity, impetuous singing and amazing stomp dancing.
