Richard Uttley & Kate Whiteley Piano Duet
Stravinsky The Rite of Spring (arr. Stravinsky)
Milhaud Le boeuf sur le toit (arr. Milhaud)
Satie Cinéma Entr’acte (arr. Milhaud, with René Clair’s film)
As a piano duo concert alone, these three early 20th century ballets would be a treat in themselves. Here, though, alongside the iconic Stravinsky, and Milhaud’s raucous, tango-inspired entertainment, there is the added frisson of hearing Satie’s score livesynched to the Dadaist film that René Clair created in tandem with the music in 1924.
The film is a visual delight of surreal, wryly-conceived imagery and imaginative nonsense. Alongside cameos from Satie himself, eminent artists of the time – Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Georges Auric and René Clair himself – all appear in this remarkable cinematic glimpse of 1920s Paris.
