Beethoven Piano Sonata in F minor Op.57 Appassionata
An encounter with Joanna MacGregor in recital is always invigorating. Her performances are unfailingly stylish, and her programmes always startle with their thoughtfulness and satisfyingly provocative repertoire combinations.
Bookended by two of Beethoven’s towering masterpieces, MacGregor’s programme presents Ginastera’s fiery Argentinian dances alongside Chopin’s distinctive take on the Polish folk-dance Mazurka. Sofia Gubaidulina’s cataclysmic Chaconne challenges Baroque form with a spiritual intensity, while MacGregor’s own transcriptions of the great political activist and musician Nina Simone crackle with fiery virtuosity, referencing Liszt, Bach and the blues.
