With support from Hannah Read
As a session musician John Smith’s talent and influence is showcased through his exceptional guitar playing with artists as diverse as Joan Baez, David Gray and Lianne La Havas. It’s this star-studded session career that has earned him the respect of “The guitarists’ guitarist” (The Sunday Times).
In his solo career, he is no less accomplished. With the release of his 6th studio album ‘The Fray’, Smith’s “gilded songwriting with a melodic flair” (Clash) is a shining example of his skill in discussing challenging subjects with beauty. “A lot of these songs”, Smith describes, “are about accepting that life is hard, but just holding on and trying to enjoy it anyway”.
Join him for an evening of intimate songwriting, a honey-on-gravel voice accompanied by his pioneering guitar playing and a host of guest musicians in the sonorous surroundings of St George’s Bristol.
Hailing from Scotland and now based in Brooklyn, Hannah Read is a versatile multi-instrumentalist widely recognised on the International stage. She’s best known for her fiddle playing, songwriting and was recently described as one of “the finest singers of the day” in MOJO Magazine. Hannah leads her own band and is an in-demand collaborator on both sides of the Atlantic, including one part of the critically acclaimed British folk super-group ‘Songs of Separation’, winners of ‘Album of the Year’ at the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Her original songs are largely influenced by the people, places and landscapes she has encountered along the way, as well as musings of home, travel, love and loss. This can be heard on her critically acclaimed album Way Out I’’ll Wander (Hudson Records) which is compiled of “nine gorgeous originals” (The Guardian).
She has collaborated with numerous artists that span from American folk luminaries Tony Trischka and Melanie Safka, to Sarah Jarosz, Darlingside, Jefferson Hamer and Andy Monaghan of Scottish indie rock band Frightened Rabbit. Equally at home improvising or playing Appalachian old time music on fiddle alongside delivering finely wrought original songs, Hannah Read is an artist who can’t be pinned down to one continent, one city, one project, one mode of expression.
