The Young Composers Academy is a new initiative designed to support the development of promising young composers aged 14-18 from across the South West. Recruitment began this autumn as we invited students from schools and colleges across the region to participate in a series of composer-led workshops and professional performance opportunities taking place throughout 2016.

The initiative is a three year, rolling programme which will offer the most promising and committed students the opportunity to progress each year, working on their music writing skills and compositional style with support and guidance from professional composers and musicians and the chance to win one of several professional commissions as St George’s ‘Young Composer in Residence’ at the end of year three.

We are thrilled to be working in partnership with the team at New Music in the South West (NMSW), and are very grateful to the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, whose generous support has enabled us to launch this wonderful project which will support the wealth of young talent out there in the South West!

During 2016 NMSW held 6 workshops at locations across the region, providing opportunities for close to 90 talented young musicians. These sessions formed the entry point for the Young Composers’ Academy with 10 of the most promising students being offered the chance to enrol for the full 3 year programme.

New Music in the South West also holds an annual composition competition, the NMSW Young Composers’ Prize, which we hope workshop participants will enter. For more information about NMSW please click here.

The growing list of composers who have been commissioned by NMSW ranges from promising young or early career composers through to those with international reputations. Including: Anna Meredith, John Pickard, Michael Ellison, Litha Efthymiou, Geoff Poole, Julian Leeks, Sara Garrard and many others.
