A note from Phil Johnson, Senior Programme Producer

In advance of their autumn season concert at St George’s on Thursday 16 November, BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Line-Up has just provided us with a perfect summary of the particular pleasures offered by the duo of Tommy Smith and Brian Kellock, who together represent what might well be the best sax and piano pairing in all of jazz. As well as playing some killer tunes, including a wonderful opening medley of ‘Star Eyes’ and Michel Legrand’s ‘The Summer Knows’ ,Tommy talks about the importance they place on playing without amplification. He also rather castigates the dryness of the recording’s Glasgow Jazz Festival venue in comparison to settings where there is more natural reverb, and the piano is big enough to communicate effectively without an electrical assist. Such as – cue drum roll – St George’s Bristol!
