Brandon Hill Chamber Orchestra is thrilled to be giving the premiere of Eleanor Alberga’s new symphony, which was specially commissioned by the orchestra in memory of David Nash, the orchestra’s principal viola and chairman, who died in 2017. Alberga cemented a reputation as a composer of huge originality and skill when she was commissioned by the BBC to write Arise Athena! for 2015’s Last Night of the BBC Proms. As Alberga herself writes: “That the first piece I write and want to call a Symphony is for BHCO is no accident…I’ve heard fine performances of so many orchestral ‘greats’ by the orchestra over the years…That this is the first time they have commissioned a work is for me a huge honour”.

Estonian conductor Andres Kaljuste returns to direct this exciting and intriguing programme, which starts with Beethoven’s exhilarating overture to ‘Leonore’. BHCO welcomes back the outstanding Romanian pianist Alexandra Dariescu for Grieg’s Piano Concerto: Dariescu made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2012 and has since appeared in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world. In addition to her busy concerto schedule she finds time to bring music to new audiences in highly original ways. Her Nutcracker and I – a 50 minute production combining solo piano, ballerina and a digital animation – has been performed to great acclaim across the globe.
