Elgar  Symphony No 1

Brandon Hill Chamber Orchestra’s English Summer Celebration showcases two popular works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose 150th anniversary we also celebrate in 2022.

The Wasps, written in 1909 as part of incidental music to Aristophanes’ eponymous play, buzzes and bristles with breezy tunefulness, and has long become a concert favourite in its own right. The Tuba Concerto originated in 1954, with the octogenarian composer still as prolific as ever, willing to take on new challenges, here, supplying generations of grateful tuba players a virtuoso piece that shows the instrument as both agile and romantically lyrical.

Tonight’s soloist is Andrew McDade, a vibrant young tuba player, whose career has taken him across Europe as both a performer and teacher. During his studies at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Andrew won several soloist competitions, including the Linda Mowat Brass Prize, and the Concerto Competition performing Derek Bourgeois’ epic 45-minute-long tuba concerto.

Berlin-based conductor Catherine Larsen-Maguire makes a welcome return to St George’s for this summer celebration, and has selected Elgar’s Symphony No 1 to partner the works by Vaughan Williams. From its majestic and noble opening, through bustling scherzo, and deeply felt, yearning slow movement to its radiant and grandiose finale, it is certain to give an uplifting climax to the concert.
