BHCO is delighted to welcome back Douglas Boyd to direct this concert of golden classics.

Currently the Artistic Director of Garsington Opera, Boyd started his career as principal oboe of the Chamber of Orchestra of Europe, where he observed at close range the probing musicianship of conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Bernard Haitink and Paavo Berglund. Boyd’s extensive discography includes many of the masterpieces of the 18th and 19 th centuries, so it is particularly exciting that he will be joined by Latvian pianist Antonina Suhanova for a performance of Beethoven’s romantic, ground-breaking 4th piano concerto along with Haydn’s last symphony ‘The London’, written at the height of his international fame.

The programme starts with Beethoven’s dramatic overture to Coriolan which was premiered at the same concert as the 4th Piano Concerto.

Programme

Beethoven Coriolan Overture
Beethoven Piano Concerto No 4
Haydn London Symphony (Symphony No 104)

“Douglas Boyd’s imperious conducting plunged us fully into Beethoven’s rural landscape, and the ASO performed superbly — the sound was warm, rich and balanced, even hypnotic” (indaily.com.au)
