Verdi  Overture to I Vespri Siciliani
R Strauss Four Last Songs
Vaughan Williams  A London Symphony

Soprano Charlotte Newstead
Conductor Tom Gauterin

Tonight’s concert combines works inspired by lifelong loves: Verdi’s love of his native Italy and its history (thoroughly reciprocated – V.E.R.D.I. was the rallying cry of the Italian unification movement!); Strauss’s devotion to the soprano voice and his wife Pauline, for whom he wrote many songs; and Vaughan Williams’s love for London.

Although Vaughan Williams is often thought of as a countryside composer, he lived for most of his life in London and absorbed its sights and sounds. A London Symphony was his own favourite among his symphonies, and paints a vivid picture of the bustling, vibrant Edwardian city. In his 150th birthday year, there could be no better tribute for one of Britain’s greatest composers.
