Tchaikovsky  Polonaise from ‘Eugene Onegin’
Scriabin  Piano Concerto Op 20
Tchaikovsky   Symphony No 5 in E minor, Op 64

Nicola Meecham Piano
Tom Gauterin Conductor

For their first concert after lockdown, Bristol Classical Players have prepared a feast of soulful Russian greats.

They open with Tchaikovsky’s swirling Polonaise from his opera based on Pushkin’s passionate novella, and conclude with his always-popular 5th Symphony. Tchaikovsky himself described the work as ‘wrestling with Fate’, in reference to the doom-laden motif that recurs throughout the work but is finally conquered.

In between, the orchestra are joined by Bath-based pianist Nicola Meecham, who makes her BCP debut with Scriabin’s unique Piano Concerto. This beautiful work feels like no other in the repertoire and showcases Scriabin’s extraordinary feeling for harmony and lyrical piano writing. It has been described as the missing link between Chopin and Rachmaninov; but it really takes a path all of its own.
