Clarinet Nick Shipman
Grieg Wedding Day at Troldhaugen
Rautavaara Clarinet Concerto
Sibelius Symphony No 2
As the days lengthen, be transported to Scandinavia where Spring melts winter’s icy fingers and life wakes anew. This programme commences with an invitation to Grieg’s former home with an orchestral version of his famous Lyric Piece for piano, the Wedding Day at Troldhaugen.
In the Clarinet Concerto which follows, Rautavaara has created a work which can be described as dramatic, lyrical and full of excitement. Nick Shipman calls it one of his ‘all-time favourite concerti’ and his performance is eagerly awaited. Rautavaara is considered as one of the most inspiring and popular composers of today.
The second half of the programme brings Sibelius’ glorious second symphony – a piece which is full of stunning melodies, deep emotions and rousing climaxes, leading to an incredibly moving and uplifting hymn at the closure of the work. This has to be one of his most beloved symphonies.
