‘The apotheosis of the dance’, Wagner called Beethoven’s seventh symphony. Its irresistible energy and relentless rhythmic drive make it an enduring favourite, and a thrilling ending to Bristol Concert Orchestra’s concert with rising star guest conductor Alex Mackinder.
The extravert brilliance of the Beethoven makes the perfect foil for Elgar’s intimate and introspective cello concerto, his last completed major work. As soloist we welcome Daniel Brandon, making his St Georges debut after playing the work in Croydon and Prague last year.
As a curtain raiser to these two well-loved works we open with a great rarity: what we believe to be the first performance in Bristol of the atmospheric introduction to Sibelius’s Kullervo Symphony. This massive work, inspired by a dark episode in Finland’s national epic the Kalevala, was acclaimed at its first performances in 1892. It was the composer’s first major breakthrough, but was then virtually lost for decades.
Join us for this intriguing rediscovery and two of the best-loved works in the repertory.
