Copland Quiet City
Arutiunian Trumpet Concerto
Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherezade

Myth and legend abound in the opening concert of Bristol Concert Orchestra’s 2026/27 season!

Fresh from his acclaimed first full season with the orchestra, Alex Mackinder conducts Rimsky-Korsakov’s ever popular Scheherezade, its dazzling orchestral colours retelling various episodes from the One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Middle Eastern folk-tales. Arutiunian’s exuberantly spirited Trumpet Concerto is likewise inspired by folk-music from his homeland of Armenia. Tonight’s soloist Joshua Cusworth also joins the BCO in Aaron Copland’s exquisitely beautiful incidental music from Irwin Shaw’s 1939 play, Quiet City. Opening the concert is music by French composer Camille Pépin, one of the most exciting compositional voices in classical music today; her extraordinary La Source d’Yggdrasil (The Source of Yggdrasil) takes inspiration from the giant tree that binds together the Norse mythological realms of Asgard, Midgard and Hel, and tonight receives its UK Premiere.

Joshua Cusworth is fast establishing himself as a mainstay of London’s professional music scene. Described by none other than Alison Balsom as ‘charismatic…a fantastic trumpet player’, he is equally at home in the standard classical repertoire as he is in jazz, baroque and a host of other musical styles. This makes him the ideal soloist for tonight’s programme, which features two very different works showcasing the trumpet, an instrument that rarely gets a true ‘soloist’ spotlight! Join Joshua and BCO’s Music Director, Alex Mackinder, as they discuss what makes the trumpet such a versatile solo instrument, and explore with them the two pieces that will feature Joshua in tonight’s concert, from the film score-esque sound world of Copland’s Quiet City to Arutiunian’s folk-inspired Trumpet Concerto.
