Felix Mendelssohn Overture ‘Ruy Blas’ Op 95
Clara Schumann Prelude & Fugue in B flat Op 16 (Orchestrated Bersweden)
Joseph Haydn Trumpet Concerto in E flat
Robert Schumann Symphony no 3 ‘Rhenish’ in E flat Op 97

Jacob Smith Soloist

For their spring concert, Bristol Metropolitan Orchestra, finds itself almost entirely based in Leipzig. Both Mendelssohn and Schumann, very close contemporaries, lived there for a while and were both associated with the foundation of its conservatoire. It is also where Robert Schumann met his future wife Clara, who had grown up there. While the Ruy Blas overture was originally intended to accompany an opera set in Spain (that in the end was not written), the Schumann symphony is a joyous memory of a happy time he and Clara spent travelling along the Rhine. The intruder in this concert is Haydn’s much loved trumpet concerto, for which we welcome the talented Jacob Smith for the first time.
