John Law's Congregation
Please note this event has now been rescheduled from its 2020 and 2021 dates and all tickets remain valid.
One of the UK’s most imaginative and adventurous pianists John Law has assembled a stellar band to present his new album Congregation (Ubuntu Music), a captivating, anthemic, powerfully rhythmic and groove infused electro-acoustic gem. Featuring James Mainwaring (Roller Trio Mercury Prize nominee) on sax and guitar, Ashley John Long on bass and Dave Smith on drums, the subtle soundscapes bring together the many parts of Law’s kaleidoscopic musical interests – jazz, rock, classical, electronics – with each composition occupying a different visual space, together forming a glittering whole.
Bristol powerhouse future jazz trio Hippo open the night with their muscular mix of synths and sax, beefy electronics and bouncing rhythms. Their recent EP opens with the stupendous DAK, where ‘filthy bass and drums meet distorted sax in a future jazz banger that boils over into a pulsing synthy soup.’
“There’s only 3 of them, but it sounds humongous”
