The Alaskan wilderness and the Arctic sky is where night and day steadily unfold with a special kind of magic. These horizons stretch far and wide across the work of John Luther Adams. Canticles of the Sky is stark, bright and expansive. It takes inspiration from sunbeams that hit ice crystals and refract, crisp halos and sundogs. You can feel the steady, creeping warmth of a frosty day.
Like Adams, composer Jasmine Morris often plays with field recordings, manipulating time with her slow-crawling textures. The Collective premiere an exciting new piece by the rising star.
Not everything evolves slowly here. Whilst Arvo Pärt’s Summa suspends us in a purity of sound, revolving melodies emerge from an open landscape and colours hang suspended in mid-air.
Meanwhile, Britten and Purcell leap off the page with infectious and vibrant energy.
