Maya Youssef

Finding Home

Part of Folk & Roots

This event has passed.

Queen of the Qanun, the 78-stringed plucked instrument, Maya Youssef returns to St George’s with her quintet to play music from her latest album Finding Home. It is a deeply evocative soundworld: infused with a sense of loss for her Syrian homeland, inspired by a more universal sense of home.

Maya’s intense and thoughtful music is rooted in the Arabic classical tradition but forges pathways into jazz, Western classical and Latin styles. It explores the emotional and healing qualities of music.

Maya says ‘I felt that the world is my home and humanity is my home. With my latest album I want to take people through a transformative journey, where they land in that place of home for them.’

Songlines presented her with Best Newcomer Award in 2018 and Youssef has previously performed at WOMAD, BBC Proms, with Africa Express and The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians and most recently at Shambala Festival in the Summer 2021.

This concert is promoted by melange.
