Poetry Prom is a new series curated and presented by the cream of Bristol’s spoken word scene, High Art & Mischief. Poetry Prom connects you to great poetry, past and present, read – and sometimes written – by Melanie Branton, Edson ‘Doc’ Burton, Patrick Chandler, Jeremy Toombs and Isabel White. Spend a thoughtful hour exploring wordsmiths and words that changed the world.

Today High Art & Mischief showcase two centuries of struggle for the rights and freedoms we enjoy today – from Shelley’s Masque of Anarchy, rad poetry from the Women’s Suffrage Movement, the flowering of creativity that was the Harlem Renaissance, the America of Dorothy Parker & Elizabeth Bishop, words of the Windrush generation, the creativity and campaigning that shaped the 1960s – Gil Scott-Heron, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Maya Angelou… And then there’s our words – in our unequal world we still have battles to win. Poetry like you’ve never heard it before – guaranteed!

This is the first of a mini-series of Poetry Proms this autumn. The other two events are:

Saturday 22 November: Forgotten Voices of War Versus Peace

Available to pre-order when booking your tickets, you can choose from a selection of house drinks on arrival, accompanied by a mezze board of bread, dips, olives, stuffed peppers, falafel, feta cheese and garden salad (all vegetarian).
