Mozart Violin Sonata No 20 in C K303
Beethoven
Violin Sonata No 1 in D
Mozart Violin Sonata in E minor K304
Beethoven Violin Sonata in F ‘Spring’ No 5 Op 24

2018 Gramophone Artist of the Year, Rachel Podger, makes a welcome return to St George’s with Grammy award-winning pianist Chris Glynn in a programme of Beethoven and Mozart.

Beethoven learned to play the violin as a boy and mastered the piano as a man.  His profound understanding of both instruments, and ability to combine them with astonishing invention and originality, is heard in ten sonatas, of which two will be performed in our programme – the high-spirited first sonata and the famously lyrical fifth sonata nicknamed ‘Spring’.  In each work, violin and piano are engaged in an endlessly fascinating and varied dialogue.

Mozart’s Sonata in E minor is the only one of the composer’s violin sonatas in a minor key, published in 1778, and this emotional and often intense work is thought to be the composer’s musical response to the death of his mother.
