Beethoven Violin Sonata in D No 1
Beethoven Violin Sonata in F ‘Spring’ No 5 Op 24
Mozart Violin Sonata in E minor K304
Beethoven  Violin Sonata in G No 10

2018 Gramophone Artist of the Year, Rachel Podger, makes a welcome return to St George’s with Grammy award-winning pianist Chris Glynn in a programme of Beethoven and Mozart.

Beethoven learned to play the violin as a boy and mastered the piano as a man.  His profound understanding of both instruments, and ability to combine them with astonishing invention and originality, is heard in ten sonatas, of which three will be performed in our programme – the high-spirited first sonata, the famously lyrical fifth sonata nicknamed ‘Spring’ and the final sonata in the set, also the last work of the composer’s so-called Middle Period, following closely after the composition of the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies.  In each work, violin and piano are engaged in an endlessly fascinating and varied dialogue.

Mozart’s Sonata in E minor is the only one of the composer’s violin sonatas in a minor key, published in 1778, and this emotional and often intense work is thought to be the composer’s musical response to the death of his mother.
