Musicians performing live on stage

Roberto Fonseca

Part of Jazz

This event has passed.

Roberto Fonseca, a scintillating pianist with a questing jazz sensibility and deep roots in the Afro Cuban tradition, makes a welcome return to St George’s.

Fonseca had already released three albums when in the early 2000s he joined legendary Buena Vista Social Club touring with legends such as Omara Portuondo. He has since continued to expand his solo repertoire with Grammy Nominated Yo, ABUC, and an acclaimed live collaboration with Fatoumata Diawara.

The latest 9th album, released in 2019 ‘presents a Cuba without borders’ says Fonseca ‘I’m building bridges between my Afro-Cuban traditions and other styles of music and doing some of the crazy things I love doing live’. ‘I’m bringing in ideas I’ve absorbed over many years of touring the world. I’m taking Cuban music forward’.

Yesun also delves into the music of Fonseca’s homeland – music as kaleidoscopic as Cuba itself – but keeps it’s sights set firmly on the future, weaving in electronic beats, spoken word and retro modern keyboards, Fonseca’s own sonorous vocals and more. It’s an album by a Cuban virtuoso determined to make music his way and modernise Cuban music in the process.
