The award-winning Sitkovetsky Trio return to St George’s accompanied by one of the most complete musicians of his generation, Michael Collins, for a spellbinding, varied programme, including Messiaen’s iconic Quartet For The End of Time.

Michael Collins clarinet
Alexander Sitkovetsky violin
Isang Enders cello
Wu Qian piano

C Schumann Piano Trio No 1 in G minor Op 17, III Andante
Chaminade Trio No 2 Op 34
Interval
Messiaen Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps

Messiaen wrote the piece in a prisoner of war camp in 1940, inspired by the vivid Biblical description of the angel of the apocalypse, and birdsong, which he incorporates into the piece. In an extraordinary moment, it was premiered by fellow prisoners on poor quality instruments in the camp; Messiaen later said: “Never was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension”.

“The Sitkovetsky Trio play not just in three individual parts but, more importantly, in three dimensions…” The Australian, 2017
