Andy Sheppard (born 20 January 1957 in Warminster, Wiltshire) is one of the world’s pre-eminent jazz saxophonists and composers. His career is closely tied to the city of Bristol, where he lived from the 1980s until 2016, and with which he still retains a strong bond. Andy has appeared innumerable times at St George’s over four decades, establishing a very special relationship with the hall and its audiences.
These performances—spanning a range of settings – have been characterized by a continual spirit of experimentation and the communication of sheer joy in making music. The enchantment with melody that began during his childhood experience as a choirboy has continued throughout Andy’s mature career, providing a vital link across his many groups and projects.
The evening’s repertoire will feature the world premiere of Sheppard’s new suite entitled Horns, for quartet and brass, interspersed with intimate solos and duos that showcase Sheppard’s versatility across both small and large-scale settings. This promises to be a momentous musical occasion in one of Andy’s absolute favourite venues.
6.15pm to 6.45pm
The evening begins with an on-stage conversation between Andy and jazz writer Tony Benjamin. Andy looks back on his career highlights and musical motivations. Open to anyone booked for the concert.
