Schumann Waldszenen (Forest scenes), Op 82

Scriabin Piano Sonata in F sharp minor No 3 Op 23

Winner of the 2018 Leeds International Piano Competition, Eric Lu makes a welcome return to St George’s with a contrasting programme of Schumann and Scriabin.  Schumann’s Waldszenen is a set of nine contrasting short pieces for piano composed in 1848-49, taking forest scenes as inspiration.  Scriabin finished his sonata in F sharp minor in the summer of 1898 shortly before starting as professor at the Moscow Conservatoire; the four-movement work is epic and broad in its scale, foreshadowing the composer’s later symphonic work.
