Tabea Debus and Jonathan Rees
This event has passed.
Tabea Debus Recorder
Jonathan Rees Viola da gamba
Born in Wurzberg in Germany, Tabea studied in Frankfurt and at the Royal Academy of Music in London where she won the Principal’s Prize, along with numerous other awards.
Georg Philipp Telemann’s Fantasias display an imaginative and fantastic line-up of musical styles. The Fantasias for a solo instrument (such as flute, viola da gamba or harpsichord) juxtapose German counterpoint with Italian virtuosity, and English and French dance movements with traditional Polish folk tunes. Perhaps this is what Telemann’s choice of title, Fantasie, refers to: a fanciful, imaginative, and even daring display of musical languages. This programme explores the continuing relevance of these ingenious pieces by adding both music by Telemann’s colleague Johann Sebastian Bach and 21st century composers to the mosaic of musical styles.
