JS Bach Suite No 4 in E flat

Some music stands outside time, skipping across centuries, equally at ease in a programme of pieces from its own period as from a future one. Bach’s set of six solo cello suites are exactly this, landmark works whose influence and popularity have endured for 300 years. Cellist Richard Tunnicliffe, a regular visitor to St George’s as both soloist and member of the OAE, has devised a pair of concerts with music set in orbit around Bach’s suites. This first one places two of the suites amongst a selection of works by a group of cellist-composers who were raising the profile of the cello as a solo instrument in the 17th and 18th centuries, including Alfredo Piatti, one of the last cellists to play the cello in the old way, without the use of the end-pin.

Richard returns in spring 2022 with a programme that places the First and Second Bach Cello Suites alongside Peter Sculthorpe’s Requiem for Cello Alone and Kenneth Leighton’s Sonata for Cello Solo.
