With support from Sam Sweeney

Bristol favourites and Real World recording artists Spiro match instrumental patterns drawn from contemporary minimalism with the energetic interplay of classic jigs and reels to form an immersive blend of influences that proves head-spinningly winning. Jane Harbour plays violin; Alex Vann, mandolin; Jason Sparkes, accordion; Jon Hunt, guitar. This festive date – complete with special guests yet to be announced – is the first of three Spiro performances as St George’s artists in residence for the 2019-2020 concert season.

“I think this is soulful music, passionate music and I love it.” Peter Gabriel.

Spiro are St George’s Bristol Artists in Association 2019-20

In beginning our annual programme of Artists in Association with local heroes Spiro, it seemed a perfect opening choice: West Country residents with a strong, slightly cussed streak of distinctively different Bristolian values. What other folk band mixes jigs, reels and sea shanties with Steve Reich-ian minimalism and drum’n’bass, let alone has Peter Gabriel – their Real World record label boss – as cheerleader in chief?

They also work in different contexts, from good time knees up to cutting-edge contemporary crossover. This winter festival themed ‘& Friends’ show will be followed in Spring by some heavy-duty minimalism in collaboration with Synergy Voices – more information on this concert here – before a final autumn 2020 appearance beings the residency to an end. And the next Artist in Association choice will be completely different.
