Grand Piano Appeal

In 2013 we launched an appeal to raise the funds needed to replace our ageing grand piano with a brand new Steinway model D concert grand. After a very busy year of fundraising we are delighted to say that we have reached our fundraising target and are absolutely thrilled that our new piano is finally here, and in regular use.

Our new piano was carefully selected by our Director Suzanne, pianist Paul Lewis and Ulrich Gerhartz (Director of Artist Services at Steinway) who all recognised the importance of choosing an instrument with just the right tone and sensitivity to suit the acoustics of St George’s.

After a brief period of ‘settling in’ the new piano had its public debut on Friday 10 October 2014 when played in recital by the renowned American pianist Stephen Kovacevich. Many people were able to share this special occasion with us, not just in the hall itself, but also live on BBC Radio 3 as park of our Brahms Experience series.

Our thanks go out to all our Friends and supporters whose generous gifts have made the purchase of this beautiful new piano possible. This top quality instrument helps to secure St George’s future as a world class concert venue attracting world class artists to perform and play here.
