Main hall

This very special concert, featuring one of Europe’s finest string quartets and the Vienna Philharmonic’s principal harpist Anneleen Lenaerts, explores the poetic and fantastical world of French music at the turn of the 20th century, moving from the intimacy of Fauré and Ravel to the theatrical atmosphere of Caplet’s Conte fantastique, which is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe.

Ravel arr G Guillon Ma mère l’oye, cinq pièces enfantines
Fauré Clair de lune, from Deux mélodies Op 46
Debussy Danse sacrée et danse profane
Fauré Impromptu in D-flat Op 86
Fauré Les berceaux , Après un rêve, Mandoline –
Caplet Conte fantastique d’après Edgar Poe Le masque de la mort rouge

Quatuor van Kuijk are no strangers to St George’s, having performed a BBC New Generation Artist lunchtime concert three years ago, that lived long in the memory of anyone lucky enough to witness it. They say: “We first met Anneleen at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the collaboration immediately felt incredibly natural—as if she were already a fifth member of the quartet. We share the same approach to colour, flexibility and storytelling in music, which makes exploring this French repertoire together especially rewarding.”
