Elliot Galvin is growing a formidable reputation as one of the foremost European pianists: adventurous, unpredictable, brilliant. His last album The Influencing Machine scored plaudits throughout the jazz world (voted best 2018 album by Downbeat and Jazzwise). His latest, Modern Times, recorded direct to vinyl in one continuous take at Haarlem’s vinyl pressing plant, heads off in a completely different direction. A quiet protest against the overproduced world we live in, it recaptures the beauty and magic of an acoustic piano trio using pre-tape technology of the 1930s. ‘There are things you learn making an album like this, about yourself and each other. You are presenting ‘you’, there’s nowhere to hide,’ says Galvin. Refreshing, honest, true.
