Matching the peerless voice and regal presence of June Tabor with the empathetic accompaniment and impassioned soloing of pianist Huw Warren and saxophonist Iain Ballamy, Quercus is a genuine one-off: a chamber jazz-meets-folk trio of equals creating unapologetically intelligent music that nourishes the mind, heart and soul. With a repertoire that can move from Shakespeare lyric to Broadway song to the English Pastoral tradition, the players delight the listener with their breadth of reference and sheer good taste. As tonight’s performance appears on the eve of the release of a second album for ECM Records, we are likely to be treated to a whole new set of tunes as well as a few old favourites.
